Individual Movement Psychotherapy for Adolescents
Movement psychotherapy can provide adolescents with a creative sounding board and additional support as they navigate through this complex stage of life. By facilitating awareness of the body-self, movement can assist the adolescent in connecting their internal world with the external.
This form of psychotherapy allows the adolescent to guide their own process of self-discovery in collaboration with the therapist. The structured exercises offer starting points and a framework for identifying personal material. (please see What to Expect from a Session)
Improvising with movement requires letting go of self-judgement and trusting the self to explore. It also requires paying attention to how we make and carry through decisions. This leads to greater confidence in the ability to respond and manage impulses. The therapeutic value for the adolescent lies in the act of experimenting with new ways of being, a central part of the experience of adolescence.
