Questions & Inquiries
Do I need to have previous experience with movement or dance?
No. The focus of Movement Psychotherapy is to explore a wider range of movement and discover your own potential for movement. No particular dance technique is taught or needs to be mastered. The therapist accompanies and guides your movement activities and explorations.
Does the whole session involve moving. What if I don’t feel like moving?
The balance of how much movement and talking a session involves differs for each session and each person. There is also time for reflecting, and at times drawing or writing. There are many reasons one might not feel like moving during a session. There is never pressure to move or judgement about movement being right or wrong.
What if the idea of this form of psychotherapy sounds interesting but I don’t feel comfortable with the idea of dance and movement?
Often people who feel ill at ease in their body or uncertain or embarrassed about movement, have much to gain from this type of psychotherapy. The process is gentle and accommodating. Megan will suggest ways to start that suits each individual’s level of comfort.
What should I wear to a session/bring to a session?
Wear clothing that you feel comfortable moving and stretching in. You may also choose to bring music that you enjoy listening to.
How often will I need to attend?
Usually, people attend psychotherapy once a week. You will discuss a schedule with Megan that best suits your life and needs.
How long will I need to attend?
The length of time people attend is determined by different factors. This will be discussed in the first meeting and reviewed periodically. Generally, a minimum of six months is suggested. There are times that the process will be challenging, but it can prove rewarding to work through those times. Planned endings are most beneficial.
Can people with physical health problems use Movement Psychotherapy?
Yes. This form of psychotherapy can be adapted and is not necessarily physically demanding in the way that other physical activities might be. It is important to advise Megan of any physical health problems or injuries.
Is Movement Psychotherapy covered by Health Insurance?
Unfortunately, at this time, most Health Insurance plans do not currently cover Psychotherapy in Ontario. However, if you have Health Insurance, confirm with your provider. The regulation of Psychotherapy in Ontario is under review. This is a positive change that will clarify services. My practice will meet the new regulatory requirements and I am actively following these procedures.
Please contact Megan if you have other questions or inquiries.
